01 _____ ABOUT USLegal Aid Project is a non-governmental organization which was established in 1992 by the Uganda Law Society under the Trustee Incorporation Act and the Non-Government Organization Act.

Legal Aid Project of the Uganda Law Society (LAP-ULS) implements project activities under the strategic objectives 3 and 4 of the ULS 2023-2027 Strategic Plan: To enhance the promotion of the rule of law, good governance and the respect for human rights as well as to increase access to justice for the indigent, marginalized and vulnerable persons in Uganda.

LAP-ULS has over the years positioned itself as the leading provider of comprehensive legal aid services in the country with 23 legal aid clinics located in Kampala, Luzira, Jinja,Luwero,Masindi,Kabale, Kabarole, Mbarara, Gulu, Pader, Kitgum, Arua, Yumbe, Moyo, Amuria,Kaberamaido, Soroti, Abim,Kotido, Moroto, Nakapiripirit, Nabilatuk and Amudat.

LAP-ULS has been able to make tremendous strides in achieving its objectives of enhancing access to justice for the indigent, marginalized and vulnerable Ugandans and the promotion of the rule of law and respect for human rights with financial support from different development partners who include; the International development law organization(IDLO), UN women, International Rescue Committee (IRC), Danish Refugee Council (DRC), Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Royal Danish Embassy (RDE), Governance and Security Programme-Access to Justice Sub-Programme (formerly JLOS), Embassy of Ireland in Uganda, and the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The activities carried out include; legal representation legal in courts of law, legal advisory support through conducting alternative dispute resolution, giving legal advice and counseling and conducting human rights awareness campaigns, conducting prison outreaches and visits to detention facilities to assist suspects and prisoners, develop and print Information, education and communication materials(IEC) materials. The Probono Department; This is coordinated through offices in Kampala and is responsible for providing administration and coordination of pro bono legal services between indigent persons in need of legal services and advocates that are prepared and able to assist them. The ULS pro bono scheme draws its authority from the Law council which has the mandate to enforce and regulate the provision of legal services in Uganda.

KEY ACTIVITIES

  • Conduct prison out reaches and visit detention facilities to assistant suspects and prisoners.
  • Establish a new satellite legal aid clinic in Nabilatuk
  • Develop and print Information, Education, Communication (IEC) materials.
KEY INNOVATIONS
  • PULIDAWO APP and USSD Code. Clients log in to locate an advocate for assistance.
  • IVR-Recorded Voice Response. Clients call a toll free line (080010051) and speak to a lawyer. They also listen in to the recorded information on GBV, bond and bail.
  • ULS will be running a call blast next quarter to women and girls in the communities informing them of ULS-LAP services and GBV.
